How do I get a permit?

Good to know before you apply: Once your permit is approved, you must pick it up and pay for it within 2 weeks, or you'll need to reapply. You'll be notified by phone when your permit is ready. Payment must be made in person by cash, check, or card (card payments have a surcharge).
Building Permits
Fastest way: apply online.
Prefer paper, or need help? Apply in person at the Town Office or by email. You'll need:
- A completed Building Permit Application (printable copy below), including a site plan drawn to scale showing:
- All current structures on the property
- The location of your septic system and well (if applicable)
- Lot lines
- The new structure you're proposing, with distances to property lines and any bodies of water
- Building plans or construction documents. If the proposed structure is a prebuilt structure such as mobile homes, modular homes, or sheds, please submit the manufacturer plans.
Once you have a complete application and plans, you may submit them in person at the town office or you may email them to the Code Enforcement Officer (CEO). The CEO will review your application and approve or deny your permit based on the information provided. The CEO may request additional information for your application in order to make a determination.
Plumbing Permits
Fastest way: apply online.
Prefer paper, or need help? Apply in person at the Town Office or by email. You'll need:
- A plumbing permit application (also known as an HHE-211 — printable version can be found below)
Submit your application and plans in person at the Town Office, or email them to the Code Enforcement Officer. The CEO will review everything and may follow up if more information is needed.
Septic & Wastewater Permits
Before you apply, most projects require a licensed Site Evaluator to visit your property and design a system. Find one on the Maine DHHS list of licensed Site Evaluators (PDF).
Exceptions: a site evaluator is not required for tank-only replacement or an alternative toilet installation — see below.

- New system or septic field: Your Site Evaluator's system design, plus Form HHE-200
- Tank-only replacement: Form HHE-200a (printable copy below) — no site evaluator needed
- Alternative toilet: Form HHE-200 (printable copy below) — no site evaluator needed
Submit your form(s) in person at the Town Office, or email them to the Code Enforcement Officer. The CEO will review your application and follow up if more information is needed.
