Peterborough Cemetery

Located approximately 1.3 miles west of Route 1 via Sandy Shores Road and Bunker Hill Road. The cemetery is accessible by walk-in only down a dirt road about 200 yards from the cemetery sign.  Please use caution while parking along Bunker Hill Road and do not block any adjacent driveways.

This historic cemetery primarily served the local Black community—believed to have been the largest in Maine. While the earliest visible gravestone dates back to the 1850's, evidence suggests that burials began as early as the early 1800's. Oral history has indicated that there may be up to 100 unmarked graves here, and many individuals known to have lived in the community remain undocumented as to their final resting place. Modern burials are only open to descendants of the historical Peterborough community.

Over time, the site has been referred to as Peters Cemetery, Petersburg Cemetery, and Peterboro Cemetery.

Please note: This is a walk-in cemetery only. Visitors should park at the end of the avenue near Bunker Hill Road by the designated sign. Kindly avoid blocking any nearby driveways.

Peterborough Veterans Memorial Monument

The Town of Warren held a Veterans memorial monument dedication ceremony at the Peterborough Cemetery on Saturday, October 28, 2024. The monument is dedicated to the Veterans from the Peterborough Community who served our country during the following conflicts: American Revolutionary War, Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I and the Korean War. There were over 70 attendees which included local and other Peters Family descendants from across the United States.

A reception was hosted following the ceremony at the Knox Museum in Thomaston. The Town of Warren is indebted to John Meyn, the cemetery’s benefactor, for his commitment and dedication to recognize and honor the Veterans of the Peterborough Community.

The Peterborough Cemetery is located on Bunker Hill Road in Warren, about 1.3 miles west from Rt. 1.
