Old Settlers Cemetery
About 1 mile west on Route 1 from the Iron Bridge at the Thomaston-Warren line, take Old Settler's Road to the east. The cemetery is on the left about .4 mile from Route 1, just before reaching the river. This is an ancient burial ground and no modern burials are permitted.
Please note:This is a walk-in cemetery only. Park at the chain gate and walk down the dirt road to the cemetery. Please do not block the driveway of the adjacent land owner.
This is believed to be the first cemetery established in the area. The land was originally designated by Samuel Waldo as the "Meeting House Lot." The first Presbyterian Church in the region once stood between the cemetery and the river.
Many early graves are unmarked, or marked only with fieldstones or missing stones, and dozens of burials remain undocumented.
The cemetery was likely in use from around 1736 until about 1792, when the Town Cemetery was established.
