Located in the heart of downtown Warren, the Warren Free Public Library is more than a place for books—it’s a vital community space offering resources, programs, and a welcoming atmosphere for residents of all ages.

  • Monday & Tuesday: 4 PM – 8 PM

  • Wednesday: 12 PM – 6 PM

  • Thursday: 4 PM – 8 PM

  • Friday: 10 AM – 6 PM

  • Saturday: 9 AM – 3 PM

  • Sunday: Closed


Services & Amenities

  • Book & Media Lending: A varied collection including fiction, nonfiction, large print, DVDs, and audiobooks

  • Interlibrary Loans: Borrow materials from MSAD 40 Consortium member libraries (Friendship, Union, Waldoboro, Washington)

  • Digital Resources: Access to the MARVEL! virtual library and e‑books/audiobooks via cloudLibrary

  • Public Computers & Wi‑Fi: Two desktops available plus free Wi‑Fi; printer/copier available for a nominal fee

  • Children’s Space: A dedicated upstairs area for youth with picture books, chapter books, and bright, engaging furnishings

  • Meeting Space: Non-private community meeting space is available upon request; library events take precedence

  • Purple Trash Bags: Sold at the circulation desk, supporting town waste programs ($6.25/sleeve of 5)


History & Mission

The Warren Free Public Library dates back to 1792 as a modest town library, later becoming a free public library in 1900. The current M.R. Mathews Memorial building was dedicated in 1928, with the second floor added in the 1970s. In 1990, it officially became a municipal library under town operation .

Mission: The library enriches the lives of residents by maintaining an evolving collection and providing a friendly, accessible environment for social, academic, and personal growth .

Getting a Library Card

Free cards are available to Warren residents with proof of residency. Ask staff about non-resident privileges, interlibrary loans, and digital access.
